Jan Sunday

Jan Sunday is a self-taught visual artist and musician who only began making visual art full-time in 2018, when she first moved to Manila. Her work draws from an eclectic array of influences, including–but not limited to–“the narratives and portrayals of ancient civilizations, political theories, punk rock, the sacred feminine, dystopian novels, and the concept of time.”

Her mysterious and impish tapestries, photographs, and paintings offer voyeuristic glimpses into intimate moments where the work itself engages in acts that seem at once seductive, serious, and playful at the same time. For her, these works explore notions of relocation, displacement, and vulnerability. Her subjects, whether they’re bodies, lingerie, food, spaces, or objects represent her own experiences, and in her enlightenment, the multifaceted identities of women. What’s important to Sunday is connecting with her process, and in her own suspension of time, she is consumed by more discoveries of the self and the world around her.

Jan Sunday had recently been included in Art-list’s 10 Women Artists in Philippine Contemporary Art (published April 29, 2020 on art-list.com). A milestone for a Cebuana artist who had just pursued art full-time for just about a year. Amidst the national quarantine, she has managed to create several series of works as meditations on the current situation.
